Diagonale 2019
Another year, another time where the city of Graz dresses itself in the Diagonale's red and white stripes. 5 days full of movies, documentaries, discussions..
This year, I went to a couple of really exiting screenings, but the ones I liked most were "Apfelmus" an animation by Alexander Gratzer, the very innovative "Don't know what" by Thomas Renoldner, and the two heartbreaking and thrilling documentaries "Sea of Shadows" by Richaed Ladkani and "You only die twice" by Yair Lev.
One of my favourites this year was "Calvande", by the last years innovative Kino winner Johann Lurf. Since winning with a movie collage * last year, they asked him to prepare a short film as a trailer for Diagonale this year.
Johann shows a simple setting and plays with optical illusions created by the colourful graphic, light, kinetic energy. A colourful wheel that spins, creates a mesmerising effect, that pulls you into the film. An exciting part of the Diagonale this year, was the collaboration with Kunsthaus Graz, where they held the Earth Series exhibition by Laura Wagner and Cavalcade. Normally, the audience doesn't have insights into the movie props and artwork, which they decided to show.
Here are some of my highlights from this year's Diagonale.
