Micro Bathroom Design: where creativity meets functionality

After several months of careful consideration and search, I am thrilled to announce that my bathroom design is finally done. Let me take you back to the beginning. As I mentioned in one of my previous blog posts, this apartment had no bathroom, so my father and I took it upon ourselves to build one. For the floor and one of the shower walls, I chose colourful FMG terrazzo tiles from Vistra. Given the compact size of the bathroom, it was clear that the shower had to be mounted strategically. To create a seamless look, I have incorporated the shower door between the walls, featuring a sleek black frame that adds a modern touch. The trend of black shower fittings and faucets caught my eye initially. After consulting with architects and experienced staff from Vistra, I have decided on a classic chrome finish with a minimalist design. Apparently, black fittings and faucets are prone to scratches and water stains, and they would require constant cleaning and maintenance. With this valuable insight, I am now confident in my decision to choose a more timeless option.

I have always loved minimalist bathrooms and wanted mine to reflect that aesthetic. Intentionally, I wanted to avoid adding furniture, instead deciding on two large shelves – one for the sink and the other for towels and bathroom supplies neatly stored in a pleated box. Fortunately, a friend of mine had some larger pieces of old wood at home, and I took the opportunity to repurpose them for my bathroom. Given the size and weight of the wood, I borrowed my father’s large car to transport it to a small village where they would cut it professionally with industrial saws. Once I had the pieces at home, I embarked on the lengthy process of preparing the wood to withstand the moist environment of a bathroom. I wanted to preserve the natural rough edges and even retain some of the bark on one side for a rustic look, which required meticulous wire brushing to remove weak portions of bark. The wood had some wormholes that I chose to preserve, adding to the overall aesthetic. After multiple rounds of sanding and oiling, utilizing Tundrino oil, known for its high moisture resistance, I achieved the desired level of protection. I repeated the sanding and oiling process six times, making sure that the wood was properly treated. Remarkably, it has been ten months since I installed the shelves, and they remain in perfect condition. However, I plan to apply a thin layer of oil in a few months to maintain their longevity.

My father expertly installed the rectangular sink on the top shelf and taught me how to connect the pipes and faucet. To complement the handmade appearance of the shelves, I selected an irregularly shaped mirror, adding a touch of uniqueness to the space. The most recent addition to the bathroom was a light pendant that follows the design of pendants in the kitchen. This pendant light provides the perfect illumination for my make-up routine.

I am pleased with how everything turned out. I am also immensely grateful for my help from my father and guidance throughout the process. Without his expertise, I would not achieve this result alone. I am thrilled to finally have a functional and aesthetically pleasing space that meets my unique vision.
